We welcome you to join the Philadelphia I-Connect Program. This program will be carried out year round and will involve five hours of instruction each week for ten weeks each semester. In addition, you may be selected to take part in a summer intensive workshop for ten weeks during the summer. All participants will learn science, technology, engineering and math skills through participating on a geographic information systems project related to a local environmental problem. You will gain information technology skills through developing your projects. And you will have the opportunity to share what you have accomplished through gaining skills on using the Internet. Instruction will be provided by Temple University faculty and graduate students in Biology, Geography, Geology, Kinesiology, Physiology, Engineering and Computer Information Systems.During the school year, your instruction will be provided at Temple University in state-of-the-art computer technology centers located in academic departments and research centers across the university. You will also have the opportunity to participate in internships tailored to your specific interests in science and technology.You will also participate in a summer intensive workshop held at Temple University, and you will conduct fieldwork and create a Web site based that shares spatial information about environmental problems in the local community. You will participate on a team that is responsible for developing a data set that will form part of a community geographic information system. You will be provided with training throughout the summer intensive program on identifying and depicting characteristics related to the information you gathered and converting that information into digital form. In the process, you will use digital photography, digital audio, video, and tabular records pertaining to the datasets.
